Unity for Children Proclamation

Child Abuse Prevention to Transformation

WHEREAS, far too many children endure abuse, neglect, and the lasting impact of parental substance use and domestic violence—experiences that can fracture their sense of safety, identity, and hope; and

WHEREAS, these forms of trauma are rarely isolated—they are often layered and deeply connected, leaving children to carry burdens they did not choose and should never bear alone; and

WHEREAS, Unity for Children is a movement born out of the belief that we must do more than raise awareness—we must act boldly, collaboratively, and compassionately to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and give every child the opportunity to grow up surrounded by safety, support, and love; and

WHEREAS, we envision a future where healing replaces harm, where families are supported before they reach a breaking point, and where children are no longer defined by the trauma they’ve survived, but by the futures they are free to create;

NOW, THEREFORE, Unity for Children reaffirms its commitment to April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month—and calls on our communities to extend this commitment beyond a single month and into every day of the year. Let this be not only a moment of awareness, but a sustained movement for transformation.

We call on every individual, leader, family, school, faith group, organization, and system to embrace this shared responsibility. We urge:

  • Communities to continue creating safe, stable, and nurturing environments for children;

  • Neighbors and leaders to keep listening, supporting, and acting with care;

  • Systems to work in unison to prioritize prevention, early support, and well-informed responses that address the root causes of intergenerational trauma;

  • And all of us to carry forward a vision of transformation—not just in April, but always.

Let April be the spark that ignites year-round action. Let us rise together to protect children, disrupt harm, and build a future rooted in safety, connection, healing, and justice—for every child, everywhere.

Sincerely,

Katrina L.
